The students of Bandon High School are released at 1:30 on Friday, the 18th. The final bell of the day will signal the beginning of Winter Break. Eighteen long days away from school. Students and staff, alike, welcome the days where they do not have to deal with homework, noisy hallways, and restrooms that never seem to have toilet paper.
The holidays are celebrated differently by each and every family. Some may celebrate it with Christmas, the decorating of their tree, giving others presents, and sipping eggnog by the fire. Others may celebrate the holidays with Hanukkah. They light an additional candle on their Menorah on each night of the holiday. They play the game of dreidel, and enjoy foods that are part of the tradition.
Each family has a way of celebrating the holidays, and they may not be the ones talked about in this article. But celebrating the holidays isn’t the only thing they do during the break. Some families could go skiing. Some may build a new puzzle each holiday, while some may just bake cookies with each other. Winter break is a time for families to get together and work on old traditions or making new ones.
“A tradition my family has is that one Christmas Eve we open only one present,” senior Isaac Golden shares. “Then on Christmas day we open the rest of the presents. This year we are going to be celebrating at our new home. My favorite thing about break though is New Years. It’s fun hanging out with friends, staying up late, and partying, but not in the bad way. What type of kid do you think I am?
When Grover was asked about the break, she smiled with the thoughts of the past.
“When my mother was four, till I was a junior is high school, Santa always visited us at 8pm on Christmas Eve. Santa was one of my grandfather’s friends. When it was around 7 or 8pm, he would bring in our best presents and hand them to my family and me. One new thing I am going to do is I am going to visit my niece and nephew in Utah this holiday.”
The holidays are filled with traditions. Each tradition is different. What is the same though, is the love that is spread from family member to family member. The holidays only come once a year, though. So don’t waste your time on pointless arguments. Such as your cousin Bobby stole your Tonka truck when you were only five years old.
Share you smiles, your hugs, and your love with everyone you hold dear. The holiday happiness does not stay for long.
